Employer branding for defence and space: becoming the employer talent chooses
For defence and space companies, the main brake on growth is no longer orders; it is hiring. Effective employer branding shows real jobs, answers the question of purpose honestly, and gives candidates concrete reasons to choose you over a tech, energy or automotive employer.

Higher budgets mean higher production rates, and therefore more hiring, for profiles (welders, machinists, technicians, systems engineers, cybersecurity specialists) that other industrial sectors are chasing too. Large groups have big recruitment machines; SMEs and mid-caps have to compensate with a sharper, more human employer brand.
Candidates’ three objections, and how to answer them
| Objection | What lies behind it | Communications response |
|---|---|---|
| “I don’t know what you make” | Lack of awareness of the jobs and products | Show the jobs, workshops and teams, with approved visuals when the product is confidential |
| “Is working in defence compatible with my values?” | A legitimate ethical question | Explain the mission (protection, sovereignty, supporting the armed forces) soberly, without militaristic imagery |
| “Defence companies are rigid and closed” | The image of a siloed sector | Employee stories, career paths, training, innovation, life on site |
What we deliver
- Diagnosis: internal interviews, review of online reviews and competitors’ job ads, map of hard-to-fill roles.
- Employer value proposition: what you really offer, phrased for each job family.
- Story and identity: tagline, tone of voice, employer visual guidelines consistent with your corporate brand.
- Content: employee portraits, job films, careers page, LinkedIn campaigns, materials for schools and job fairs.
- Measurement: volume and quality of applications, sources and offer acceptance rates, before and after.
The sector-specific constraint
Not every workshop, product or face can be shown. We plan shoots with your security officer, blur or reframe what needs it, and use 3D or illustration when the product is confidential. Every piece of content is approved before release.
How we work and timeline
A full programme (diagnosis, value proposition, identity, first content) usually takes three to six months. We work either per project, on a quote based on your brief, or as an ongoing partnership on a fee basis. For a first diagnosis, we offer a €2,500 audit, credited against the assignment if you go ahead.
Options
| Option | Right if… | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| HR and internal comms team | Hiring is occasional | Little time to produce content and campaigns |
| Recruitment firm | You need a few rare profiles | Fills the role, not long-term attractiveness |
| Generalist employer branding agency | Confidentiality is not a constraint | Has to learn filming and approval constraints |
| Sector-specialist agency | Hiring volumes are high and confidentiality matters | Does not replace your HR team for selection |
Our limits
- We do not recruit for you: we make your company attractive, and your HR team selects.
- Employer branding cannot make up for uncompetitive pay or working conditions; our diagnosis says so when that is the case.
Frequently asked questions
Can we build an employer brand without showing our products?
Yes. Candidates care first about jobs, teams and prospects. Products can be suggested through 3D or illustration.
How long before we see results?
Application volumes usually start to move within a few months of launching the content; employer reputation takes several years to build.
Do we need separate recruitment social media accounts?
Not necessarily. For most SMEs and mid-caps, a strong careers page and a well-run LinkedIn presence are enough.
