France’s defence budget update: what €36bn more means for suppliers’ communications

France’s Law 2026-791 of 16 August 2026 updates the 2024-2030 Military Programming Act: defence payment appropriations rise from €400bn to €435.7bn over the period, adding €36bn of new resources between 2026 and 2030. The annual trajectory reaches €57.1bn in 2026 and €75.7bn in 2030, and the law sets a defence effort target of 3.5% of GDP by 2035.

For suppliers, the issue is no longer budget but visibility

According to the French government, the defence industrial base comprises nine major groups and around 4,500 start-ups, SMEs and mid-caps. The extra money will turn into orders for companies that prime contractors and buyers can identify quickly. An SME whose website does not clearly say what it does, for whom and with which qualifications starts at a disadvantage.

Three consequences for communications

  1. Hiring becomes the top priority. Higher production rates mean more hiring for contested profiles. Employer branding comes before commercial awareness.
  2. The financial story matters again. Funders are returning to defence and expect a readable order book and clear governance.
  3. Speaking up becomes necessary. Industrial ramp-ups are visible locally; explaining your role, rather than staying silent, is now a matter of public acceptance.

What an SME can do now

  • Check what Google and AI assistants say about it when asked about its line of business.
  • Update its website: offer, qualifications, publishable references, careers page.
  • Prepare the next trade show with materials cleared by export control.
